Martin Wilhelm Schaeffer Papers, 1899-1945

1899-1945

Martin Wilhelm Schaeffer of Dresden, Germany, married Frances Spencer Carter (1875-1938) of Raleigh, N.C., in 1899; served in the German army during World War I; visited the United States periodically, 1935-1939; lived in Asheville, N.C., with his wife; and was interned in the United States for a time during World War II. The collection includes family correspondence and other papers of Schaeffer and members of his family. About half of the collection comprises letters, largely 1936-1945 and written in German, concerning children, health and other family matters, but also briefly mentioning political affairs in Germany. There are three letters from Schaeffer to his daughter, Laura Schaeffer Schnorrenberg (1901-1975), written during his service in the German military, 1915. His correspondence with his son Theodore Wilhelm Schaeffer, a soldier in the United States Army in World War II, is also included. The balance of the collection consists chiefly of personal financial records and transactions with German banks; a scrapbook belonging to Frances Carter Schaeffer; postcards received by the Schaeffers; and letters to Francis Carter Schaeffer and other items, 1932-1935, of Thomas Bailey Lee (1873-1948), state judge of Idaho.
